Caring for Your Circulation
With every beat of your heart, your vascular system is circulating blood throughout your whole body. Usually, your veins are shooting nutrients to where they're needed most. If you have vascular disease, something is interrupting this vital job.
Our vascular team provides surgical and non-surgical treatments to keep you healthy. Visit our experts for vascular screenings and treatment options that meet your needs.
When to See a Vascular Specialist
Vascular disease is often called a silent killer and presents few symptoms. It is important to see a vascular doctor to assess your risk.
Common vascular disease risk factors include:
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
- Slow or non-healing sores on feet or legs
- Aching, cramping or pain in your limbs while exercising
- Family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
Get Relief from Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are swollen flawed veins. They are purple or blue veins that look enlarged and warped. Varicose veins are most common in your legs or feet due to increased pressure on these veins while standing and walking.
To most patients, varicose veins are an issue that, while unsightly, causes no pain. For others, these veins cause achiness, soreness and throbbing pain.
If you have varicose veins, try these self-care measures:
- Walk more to encourage blood circulation
- Lose weight to ease pressure on your veins
- Avoid tight clothes and uncomfortable shoes
- Elevate your legs
- Get compression stockings
See a physician if you’re still concerned or if your symptoms worsen after trying these methods. Other treatments for varicose veins include:
- Sclerotherapy: Injecting a chemical to the affected veins to scar them so they can no longer carry blood. The body then absorbs the scarred veins.
- Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): A minimally invasive procedure that uses a tube to put heat directly into varicose veins to close them. This improves blood flow and reduces blood pooling.
- Vein stripping: Making small cuts through which a surgeon ties off and removes veins.
- Microphlebectomy: Inserting special tools through small cuts to remove varicose veins. This procedure can be done alone or with vein stripping.
