Nicola Herting, PhD

Experience & Research

Dr. Herting is an adjunct clinical scientist at the Sanford Center for Biobehavioral Research and works with the Treatment Collaborative for Traumatized Youth (TCTY) on the statewide implementation of evidence-based trauma screening, assessment and treatment.

Dr. Herting’s research interests include examining the impact of trauma on children’s functioning, trauma screening, PTSD, measuring trauma treatment outcomes, autobiographical memory and the evaluation of child sexual abuse prevention. Dr. Herting regularly presents at regional, national and international conferences on PTSD, child trauma and trauma screening and assessment.

She holds these leadership positions:

• Clinical Director, Treatment Collaborative for Traumatized Youth (TCTY)
• Clinical Director, Sanford Traumatic Stress Treatment Center
• Interim Mental Health Director, Red River Children’s Advocacy Center
• Clinical Psychology Supervisor, University of North Dakota Psychology Department

I strive to deliver all services using a trauma-informed and strength-based approach. I believe in the importance of using evidence-based assessments and treatments. I aim to provide a safe, accepting and validating space for my patients as they pursue healing and build resilience. 

Personal Interests

Dr. Herting enjoys being in nature, visiting the ocean, gardening, hiking and exploring new places. She also loves going on walks with her two Great Danes.
